Learn How to Reset a Check Engine Light

What causes a check engine light to come on? If the check engine light comes on in your Land Rover, your first instinct should be to check the obvious culprits, like your gas cap and your oxygen sensor. If you’re sure that you’ve dealt with the problem, but your engine light doesn’t go off automatically, learning how to reset your check engine light manually may be the right next step! Find out how to do so with confidence by taking advantage of our guide, below.

What Does the Check Engine Light Mean?

Modern vehicles are controlled by computers that monitor fuel mixtures, vehicle performance, and more. As part of an onboard diagnostic system, your car’s computer will alert you if there’s an electrical-control system issue that it can’t correct. Along with illuminating your Range Rover check engine light, your computer will store a code to indicate which system is having issues. This code can be read by the diagnostic tools at our Englewood service center.

What Causes the Check Engine Light to Come On?

You know that your Land Rover warning lights won’t just come on for no reason, but what causes a check engine light to come on exactly? There can be numerous reasons that a check engine light comes on, including:

  • Your oxygen sensor is malfunctioning or worn out
  • Your gas cap is not attached properly, and leaking fumes
  • Your mass airflow sensor isn’t working
  • Your spark plugs are worn out and need to be replaced
  • You’re dealing with an expired catalytic converter

Before you try to reset your check engine light yourself, you’ll want to make sure you take care of any problems to avoid further damaging your vehicle. If you believe you’ve fixed the problem, drive around Jersey City or Fort Lee for 20 miles or so. The light should go off automatically, and if it doesn’t, it’s time to try a hard reset.

What to Do When the Check Engine Light Comes On

If your Range Rover check engine light comes on, it’s best to have your vehicle checked to prevent further issues or a possible breakdown. While we’ll be able to provide exact diagnostics, the way your check engine light is behaving can clue you into how serious the issue might be.

  • Illuminates Intermittently- If your check engine light only illuminates occasionally, pay attention to any performance changes in your vehicle. Then, make sure to schedule an appointment asap. Intermittent check engine lights can be a sign of a system failure.
  • Constantly Illuminated- If your check engine light is always on, there’s an issue with your vehicle. Even if performance seems the same, you should schedule an appointment at a Englewood service center.
  • Blinking Light- If your check engine light is blinking, that usually means there’s a major issue with the system and that you should try to pull over as soon as you safely can. You’ll want to have your vehicle towed to a service center.
  • Illuminated Light & Performance Issues- A study decrease in performance and an illuminated check engine light can indicate that your vehicle has entered ‘limp mode’ to prevent further damage. Your vehicle needs to be taken to a service center.

Reset Your Check Engine Light: Disconnect the Battery

In many vehicles, it’s possible to reset the check engine light by disconnecting the negative battery cable for a minute or so. Here’s exactly what you need to do:

  1. Turn off your vehicle and put on the proper safety gloves and glasses.
  2. Locate your battery under the hood and find the negative terminal. It will usually be marked by a black cap and/or a negative symbol.
  3. Use a wrench to loosen the negative terminal connector. You should be able to pull the cable off easily.
  4. Carefully hold it to the side for 30 to 60 seconds. Then hook everything back up as it was!

Here as well, you’ll want to spend some time driving around New York City or Weehawken after you finish the job. If your engine light comes on again, there’s a deeper underlying issue.

While you’re under the hood, you may realize that it’s been a while since you checked your oil levels! Find out how to protect yourself today.
