When to Put on Winter Tires

Car tires on winter road covered with snow

While Land Rover SUVs offer exceptional control and handling, the changing seasons can present challenges to any driver. Specialized tires can help when the temperatures plunge, but how do you know when to put on winter tires? In order to receive the most benefits from making the switch to winter tires, it’s best to wait until the weather drops below 45 degrees Fahrenheit or 7 degrees Celsius. See how winter tires can benefit you as the colder months approach, as well as how to maintain them to avoid winter emergencies with Land Rover Englewood tire center.

Winter Tire Schedule

If you spend the winter where temps keep consistently below 45 degrees Fahrenheit, then we recommended changing over to winter tires for enhanced traction. Winter tires offer increased:

  • Flexibility: Thanks to their pliable design, winter tires can easily handle the freezing temperatures. All-season tires, on the other hand, can become stiffer and more brittle. This can lead to more frequent tire replacements.
  • Stability: Another perk of the softer rubber is that winter tires are able to improve stability by better conforming to the streets of Fort Lee.
  • Traction: Winter tires have shown a 20 percent improved snow traction when matched with all-season tires.

Recommended Tire Pressure for Winter

Tire pressure is always important, but maintaining winter tire pressure offers new challenges as dropping temperatures can impact your tire pressure even more. So, what should your tire pressure be during winter? Check your owner’s manual for an exact recommendation for your vehicle, and then review our winter tire pressure tips below:

  • Keep in mind that your tire can lose around 1 pound per square inch (PSI) of pressure when the temperature drops 10 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Through regular use, your tires can lose 1 PSI per month. This is the result of air escaping around the rim and through the treads.
  • To maintain performance and avoid excess wear, we suggest keeping your winter tire pressure within 5 PSI of the recommended amount. Your TPMS can help keep you alerted to pressure changes, or we can check your tires during your next service appointment

Difference Between Winter & All Season Tires

When it comes to winter driving options, there are a couple of tire options- winter tires, all-season tires, and snow tires, with winter and all-season being the most popular. So, what’s the difference between winter and all-season tires? We cover all three tire types below:

  • Snow Tires- Work to increase traction and control in snowy weather.
  • Winter tires- These tires are designed to stay soft when the weather drops below 50 degrees. This prevents cracking. What’s more, these tires are designed to increase performance in cold weather without snow too.
  • All-Season- Are all-season tires good in snow? All-season tires can perform to some degree in all weather, but since they can’t perfectly respond to every temperature the results are less consistent. Some will have ratings closer to summer tires, while others will be closer to the winter end of the spectrum, but none are rated equally to handle both.

The bottom line is that winter tires are designed to specifically handle the cold, which makes them the best option for New York City and Fort Lee winters.
