Who Owns Jaguar Land Rover?

Savvy drivers will already know that the companies who own Jaguar and Land Rover are one in the same. In fact, Jaguar and Land Rover are actually two halves of a single whole: Tata Motors unified these badges into a company known as Jaguar Land Rover Limited, all the way back in 2013.

Now, who owns Tata Motors? The Tata Group: India’s largest corporate conglomerate! As we mentioned above, they acquired both Jaguar and Land Rover from Ford in 2008. Prior to being owned by Ford, the Land Rover badge was the property of BMW.

Land Rover SUVs were originally manufactured by The Rover Company, a British manufacturer based in Solihull (Warwickshire). They merged with the British Leyland Motor Corporation in 1967—and a series of restructurings would follow. They were partly nationalized in 1975, changed their name to Rover Group in 1986, and were a subsidiary of British Aerospace from 1988 to 1994. It was in 1994 that they were acquired by BMW.

Where is Land Rover Made?

Although Tata Motors is based in India, Jaguar Land Rover still has deep roots in the British manufacturing industry. In fact, Jaguar Land Rover’s head office can be found in Whitley, Coventry, in the U.K. Land Rover SUVs are all designed and developed at this facility—but manufacturing takes place at a variety of different facilities.

So, where are Land Rover SUVs made today? Largely in the U.K.—but it varies from model to model:

• Solihull, United Kingdom – Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, and Range Rover Velar
• Halewood, United Kingdom – Discovery Sport and Evoque 
• Nitra, Slovakia – Discovery and Defender
• Itatiaia, Brazil – Discovery Sport and Evoque
• Pune, India – Discovery Sport and Evoque
• Changshu, China – Discovery Sport and Evoque
